You are never more than one metre from a person who wants to scream.

Three women who want to be heard over all the noise of the city join a screaming course. C, F and R attend the course for different reasons. What begins as a platform to share stories and discover their ‘innermost’, the place where our deepest emotions sit, soon spirals out of control: Female peer pressure, the survival of the fittest, the inability to shake off habits, self-protection mechanisms and the presence of genuine miscommunication start to determine the women’s weekly course meetings. This upbeat physical theatre performance on how to survive the city — and each other, invites audiences to join the women for an hour and experience their weekly screaming course. Whispering gets you nowhere in this world.

We worked on this piece from September 2006 to June 2007, regularly performing work in progress and showcases of the material to audiences at the BAC, Siobhan Davies Studios and at Stratford Circus (all London), before presenting the finished version at The Space (Isle of Dogs, London) as part of their Enterprise 2007 Festival in June. Following those successful previews, we took the production to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival 07, where we performed at CSoco from 3-18 August and were shortlisted for the Total Theatre award for ‘best original work by an ensemble’.
