Bottlefed and Kobayashi

Since February 2008 Bottlefed Ensemble have been collaborating with Kobayashi, a collective of musical improvisers. We completed two R&D phases that were aimed at researching improvisation methods that enable the company to fully integrate live music with a physical theatre process and performance.

We wanted music to become an integral part of our artistic process and our performances. We focused on the idea that musicians and performers can become one ensemble responding to their immediate surroundings. The musicians shall be as an integral part of the staging and involvement as the physical performers are, with neither compromising on the quality of their respective art form.

Conceptual Improvisations

Part of our research is to perform durational improvisations which take their stimulus from the space, the audience and (depending on the set-up of the event) other performers. We aim to find restrictions and guidelines that make free improvisation between dance, theatre and music possible and develop these into a model of exercises, tools and repertoire material. See below where we have been so far.
